What are consonants?
When we say words, we use our mouths, lips, and tongues to make different sounds. Consonants are the sounds we make by closing or partially closing our mouths. Consonants help us form words and talk to each other.
Think of your mouth like a little cave. When you say a consonant, you block or slow down the air coming out of your mouth in a special way. This creates different sounds.
Let’s try some examples:
- “B” is a consonant. When you say “b,” your lips come together and stop the air for a moment. It sounds like “buh.” Can you feel your lips touching when you say “buh”?
- “S” is another consonant. When you say “s,” you push the air through a tiny space between your teeth or your tongue and the roof of your mouth. It sounds like “ssss.” Can you try making the “ssss” sound?
- “M” is a consonant too. When you say “m,” your lips come together, just like when you say “b.” But this time, instead of stopping the air, you let it flow through your nose. It sounds like “mmm.” Can you feel the air coming out of your nose when you say “mmm”?
